Anacampseros
Origin
Anacampseros is a genus in the family Anacampserotaceae. It is widespread in southern Africa, as well as in Argentina and Bolivia. A single species is also found in Australia. Its name is derived from the Greek words anacàmpto ("I bring back") and èros ("love").
Appearance
The species belonging to the genus Anacampseros usually grow herbaceous, dwarf-like, and very slowly. Some species develop a short stem after a few years, also called a caudex, which they use for water storage. Instead of stipules, the succulents often have fine hairs that help reduce the surface area and thus help to slow down water evaporation. The flowering period is approximately from June to September. During this time, white to pink flowers form, which usually only open briefly in bright sunshine and high humidity. The flowers hang on branched flower stalks.
Care
Location: A sunny, warm location is optimal for Anacampseros. A spot by a south-facing window with plenty of light is best suited.
Substrate: In addition to cactus and succulent soil, the substrate should also contain mineral components, such as pumice or gravel. It is important that it is well-draining and loose so that excess water can drain away and waterlogging can be prevented.
Watering: This succulent doesn't need much water, so it's better to underwater than overwater it. As a rule, only water again when the substrate is completely dry.
Fertilizer: During the growing season, in the warmer months, the succulent can be fertilized approximately once a month. Cactus and succulent fertilizer is best. Anacampseros does not need fertilizer during its dormant phase.
Summer/Winter: In summer, the succulent can be placed outdoors after gradually acclimating it to direct sunlight. It should be brought back indoors when temperatures drop below 10°C. In winter, a temperature of approximately 10°C to 15°C is ideal. Fertilizing is stopped, and watering is significantly reduced or stopped altogether. The rule is: the colder the plant is, the less it needs watering.
Popular species
Anacampseros retusa f. rubra: This succulent has a low-growing, dwarf growth form and green and purple leaves. The flower is pink or white. It can reach a height of approximately 8 cm to 10 cm.
Anacampseros retusa filamentosa: This succulent also has a low growth form. Its leaves are green and covered with white threads that slightly resemble cobwebs.
Note: Anacampseros is generally non-toxic, but we cannot guarantee its compatibility with animals.
